Teresa Stohs headshotNOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT

State lawmakers passed a $114.5 billion budget for the 2026-2027 FY, avoiding a state government shutdown. The new FY starts July 1. Of note in the budget on the elections front, $1,000,000 were swept from the Department of Legal Affairs’ Election Commission Trust Fund and reverted to the General Revenue Fund.

Redistricting activities continue. Judge Hawkes declined to grant an injunction against the newly passed maps, so the LWVFL’s legal team has filed an appeal to seek relief before the 2026 midterm elections.

The Legislature has introduced a joint resolution on property taxes that proposes significant changes to Florida's property tax system, including expanded homestead tax benefits, revised assessment limits, and new restrictions on local property tax revenues. As always, the League of Women Voters will perform a careful review of any constitutional amendments that make it onto the general election ballot, and we’ll be ready to let Floridians know how a vote YES or a vote NO will impact the state.

Tuesday night, I attended a School Board Forum hosted by the Collier County Forum Coalition, of which LWVCC is a part. Often, those of us who do not have children currently in school ignore school board elections. But School Board members make important decisions that affect students, parents and the broader community each day. Since participation in elections is low – sometimes only 5-10% of voters - each vote matters more.
